The Deer Creek Sodbusters Antique Machinery Show is held every year on the second Sunday in August. It remains a one day event to the present – one of the few shows like it in the entire Midwest. It is modest in size, but what we lack in size, we more than make up in quality. The best way to describe our event is: “wholesome entertainment for the entire family”. The following are some of the features that we feel make our show unique among antique shows and worth coming to see.
More Realistic than Other Shows
Our show takes place on a real working farm. This allows us to conduct more field demonstrations, such a plowing, corn binding, small grain binding and field work with draft horses.
Leisurely Family Type Atmosphere
No large crowds or traffic jams to worry about. Convenient parking in an established grass field next to the show grounds. Free shuttle service to see all the sights without much walking. One comment we hear regularly from visitors to our show is how much they like coming because our people are so friendly and hospitable.
Entertainment and Education of the Children
In addition to showing the younger generation how their grandparents and great grandparents made their living on the farm, our show also includes a playground, children’s barnyard, and straw pile scavenger hunt.
Great Food
We operate our own lunch stand during the show and serve the best tasting food of any outdoor summer event in the area. This includes charcoal grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, polish dogs, and brats. We also have plenty of ice tea and cold soft drinks available to quench the thirst of our show exhibitors andspectators.
Plenty of Shade
A new addition to our show grounds in 1999 was a permanent picnic shelter adjacent to our lunch stand where show attendees can find shade to eat lunch or just to relax and visit with friends and neighbors. Other shade is also available under the many old trees around the Wolff farmstead and under some of the newer trees the Sodbusters planted when they first took over the show grounds.
Reasonable Prices
Admission to our show is only $7.00. Club members, exhibitors, and children under 12 are admitted free. Prices for food and drinks at our concession stand, as well as prices for T-shirts, show caps, show buttons, and other club and show memorabilia sold at our souvenir stand are also very reasonable. Revenues raised from our gate admission, concession stand, and souvenir stand are used to cover the costs of putting on our shows. Any leftover funds are used to make improvements to our show grounds. We deliberately try to keep our prices a low as possible to avoid appearing to be too commercial.
Outstanding Draft Horse Demonstrations
Our show includes more draft horses actually working in the field than most antique shows. Many of the horse exhibitors we get every year are members of Southeast Nebraska Draft Horse Association.
Excellent Line-up of Antique Tractors
In recent years, our show has drawn nearly 150 tractors annually, and for the most part, the tractors are clean and well restored – more so than you will see at the average antique tractor show
