Pasture Golf Tournament

On one Sunday in the early spring every year since 2000 the Sodbusters have hosted a Pasture Golf tournament at the Wolff farm, the location of the Deer Creek show grounds.  The golf tournament  is a nine hole four person mystery scramble that covers the entire 80 acre farm including the show grounds, grass parking lot and other fields at the farm.  It is a big hit with the local hackers, plus draws golf nuts from other communities in Southeast Nebraska.  The event also includes a beer garden — with beer sold by the club under a special event license from Nebraska Liquor Commission.  Beginning in 2010, the Sodbusters have made the decision to hold the Pasture Golf on Saturday rather than Sunday. It will still be held in the Spring, most likely in the month of April. Watch for future annoucements as the even approaches. You don't have to be a gold pro to come and have fun. We have a number of folks come to just watch the action and enjoy the nice Spring day relaxing and visiting with friends and neighbors.

Garden Tractor Pull

In the year 2009, the Deer Creek Sodbusters made a decision to host a Garden Tractor Pulling contest at our showgrounds on the same day as the Pasture Golf Tournament. The garden tractor pull is organized and sponsored by Huff-n-Puff Pullers out of Tecumseh. We hope to make this an annual event along with our Pasture Gold Tournament. for more information on Huff-n-Puff Pullers, click here.

Tractor Drive

On May 30, 2009, the Saturday after Memorial Day, the Deer Creek Sodbusters organized and hosted their first successful tractor drive or tractorcade for antique tractors. The drive begin at their show grounds south of Sterling and traversed nearly 50 miles of county roads in southeastern Nebraska with stops at the towns of Crab Orchard, Filley, Adams, and Sterling, before returning back to grounds. A total of 32 tractors participated. This event brought much enjoyment and excitement both amongst the participants and the spectators along the route. Of particular note was the good memories of days of yore that it brought back to residents of the Gold Crest Retirement Center in Adams as we passed by. We plan to make this an annual event and will post up to date news of the event at this site each year as the antique tractor drive approaches.

Supporting Events Sponsored by Others

The Sodbusters support the annual Sterling Picnic, by organizing and sponsoring the picnic parade, as well as serving food and non-alcoholic drinks at the street dance the evening of the picnic.  We also exhibit and help put on the tractor and engine display at the Johnson County Heritage Days in Tecumseh. Members of our club also exhibit at other antique tractor shows, parades, town picnics, and county fairs throughout Southeast Nebraska.

Support for Education

There are several ways we provide educational opportunities for our younger generation.  First off, our show provides a living history lesson for young folks who attend.  They can see first hand how their grand parents and great-grand parents made their living on the farm. Secondly, we support, exhibit at ,and help with living history demonstrations at events sponsored by others such as “Living History Day” — a day long history lesson for 5th graders from schools throughout Southeast Nebraska — held annually in Table Rock, Nebraska. A third way we support education is by sponsoring our own annual scholarship.  The Deer Creek Sodbusters scholarship is a $250.00 cash scholarship awarded annually to a graduating high school student from Southeast Nebraska who is pursuing higher education in an agriculturally related field.  In determining the recipient of the award, academic achievement and leadership qualities of the applicants are considered, but a major consideration is financial need.  The scholarship applies to attendance at a trade school or community college as well as a four year college or university
